“It turns out that an eerie type of chaos can lurk just behind a facade of order - and yet, deep inside the chaos lurks an even eerier type of order.” The Butterfly Effect is one signature of a system in chaos. This chaos isn’t your garden variety chaos, and you won’t find this butterfly in your garden, either. I feel some urgency to clarify these distinctions when I watch the chaos that lies behind the façade of order, and the order in the chaos, of this election season in the US. I think it might help us to see the patterns of our “civil” society, to understand those patterns for what they are, and to take action to create the ones we want to create and to leave to our children.
March 5, 2020 You know your world is complex. It is easy to get overwhelmed and confused in the face of growing demands, shrinking resources, fluid boundaries, and invisible connection.
Pattern Logic helps you see through the confusion into the deep dynamics that shape the complexity you face. Adaptive Action helps you act on what you see. When used together, these powerful tools reveal the simplicity that moves you through even in the most complex situations.
Join this session to build your capacity to see and take action to influence the simple on the other side of the complex.

We talk about change as an orderly sequence from past through present and into future. That is not how most people experience change, though. The concept of ‘stretch and fold” is a better mirror for our experience of change in human systems. In this week’s post, Glenda explores the emergent nature and living paradox of transformation in complex systems.

Sim Phei Sunn (known to us as PS) is an HSD Associate, a member of the HSD Institute Board of Directors, an extreme athlete who has completed the Seven Summits and competes often in ultra-distance running. As an experienced officer in the Singapore government, she was recently asked to share her insights from mountain climbing and endurance running that have helped her keep going at work. She has graciously allowed us to re-print her post for our newsletter.
Note, please, that while this is written for up-and-coming members of her organization, the principles she shares can be powerful for others, regardless of their place in life.

Diversity is everywhere. Yet, in our organizations we sometimes say we want diversity, while we fail to set conditions for it.
I count this time of year as a special kind of “new year” that opens possibility for my life-long adventure of learning. Maybe it’s because teaching is in my blood—both parents, a grandmother, and three sisters involved in education and schooling. Maybe it’s because I have spent over 40 years in the annual cycle of public schools. Whatever the reason, this time of the year holds a special appeal to me. Children return to school as teachers prepare for the next months of exploration and learning.

Today, all over the world, you see rising patterns of partisanship and nationalism. Even if they don’t affect you today, these trends may transform your future. HSD helps you see and respond to patterns of politics in novel and useful ways. Our models and methods generate patterns of engagement and abundance to help you connect and thrive in spite of forces that seek to divide and conquer.
Historically, humans have experienced periods when authoritarian power was on the rise, marginalizing or even eliminating opposing or dissident voices. One way these leaders influenced others was to create a sense of tension. Autocrats use stories and innuendo to make their followers believe there are “others” plotting to take away their assets, their power, or their privilege. These leaders build walls—literally and figuratively—that divide, so they can conquer. They use propaganda to spread a narrative of impending doom and fear.
In this Live Virtual Workshop, Glenda Eoyang talks about using Adaptive Action to help you step into your next wise action in the face of the propaganda of authoritarianism in your neighborhood, around your community, and across your nation.
